Surprise, Surprise!

England has the weirdest divorce system imaginable. Getting a divorce takes about two years and involves making very nasty allegations about your spouse. Commonly, divorcing couples still have to live in the same house whilst extremely acrimonious proceedings are ongoing. It is an incredibly destructive process that is so nasty that if there was any hope of the couple making a go of the marriage, it would destroy the possibility completely.

And at the end of it all, you are sort of divorced and sort of not divorced. You are given a Decree Nisi. That makes you 'sort of' divorced. Then, in time, you apply for a Decree Absolute, and that is when you really and truly are divorced and free.

Sean got his Decree Nisi before I met him 12 years ago. On Friday, his Decree Absolute came in the post. So finally, he is a free man.

Strange system. I don't recommend it.
