Oh My!! People really DO see what they expect to see!

Several years ago I read about people seeing what they expected to see. One experiment was during a university lecture. A man rushed in and snatched the lecturer's handbag. The students were asked to write statements about what happened when a bearded man had torn through the classroom yelling loudly. All of the students mentioned the beard, but the actor was, in fact, clean shaven.

The second thing was an experiment where healthy people had to report that they 'heard voices' but to act normally in every other way. All the participants were admitted to hospital and even things as innocent as reading a newspaper was seen as 'evidence' of mental illness.

You can imagine me giggling when I saw this You Tube video titled
Is Psychiatry a fake science? The Thud Experiment

Take a look and laugh. It isn't very long and it is a bit disturbing as well as funny when you think through all the implications. If the video doesn't work, this is the URL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnt6OQ4WaY0 and THIS should be a clickable link.
