I'm not sure whether this is the Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque (I will ask Sean this weekend) but the building itself is magnificent.
He showed me postcards of the inside of the Hagia Sophia (which is a museum now) and it is very high and very beautiful. I thought of those ancient craftsmen doing their best to create a dwelling place fit for their God. No power tools, cranes or bulldozers or indeed any standard measuring tool. Yet everything was so perfect, so exquisite. Imagine the sort of mind the Master Architect had, to conceive of something so awesome. And the craftsmen and their families working to realise the architects vision.
It was constructed in five years, from 532 to 537, at the orders of Emperor Justinian I and designed by Isidore of Miletus. An achievement even more remarkable when you consider Britain's Millenium Dome!!
I would be interested to know whether it was completed on time and within the Budget.
