Interesting note from Marcelle

I have just got back from sign languauge class and thought I would share the intersting discussion we had with Gina my tutor. She really is an amazing woman. She was attacked and as a result of a serious head injury lost her hearing. She was telling us about the various gadgets etc she has to help her. She was also telling us about her pets.

She had a dog who the police trained to be a hearing dog for her, she also owned 2 cats (persians) who noticed that the dog got treats for performing various tasks, such as alerting her to the fact that there was someone at the door. The cats decided this was unfair and needed to be addressed. So the next time the door bell rang the went with the dog to tell her. She in the end had to keep 3 treat jars handy.

Her dog died 7 years ago and she has since lost one of her cats but the remaing one does all the things the dog did within the house. She wakes her up in the morining. If the door bell rings she goes and has a look, if it is someone she recognises she goes to Gina and puts her paw on her knee, if she doesn't she just sits at the door, so Gina know to be causious. She alerts her to the cooker alarm and various other things, all she has taught herself.

Gina was telling us that they have now realised that not all disabled people have the room for dogs (or assisting pets as they are called) so they are training cats as well, as they are finally realising cats are as if not more intellegent than dogs.
